National (Parliamentary General Election)

The National Election in Tonga is held every four years. On polling day, electors in each of the 17 electoral constituencies cast their votes to elect one representative each to the Legislative Assembly, while the Nobles elect 9 representatives, making a total of 26 elected seats in Parliament. Under the Constitution, the Prime Minister may also recommend to His Majesty the King the appointment of up to 4 Cabinet Ministers from outside the elected members.

This is an election year for Tonga where people will go to the poll on Thursday 20th November 2025.

Local Elections (District and Town Officers Elections)

The Electoral Commission is also responsible for the administration and management of the Local Election which is also held every four years. The next Local Election will be held in May 2027.

Election Cycle

A General Election is conducted every two years, alternating between the National and the Local Elections. Accordingly:

  • The National Election will take place in 2025
  • Two years later, in 2027 the Local Elections will be held
  • Two years after that, in 2029, the next National Election will follow.

The cycle continues in the same pattern, ensuring that National and Local democratic processes are regularly maintained.

By-Elections

A by-election will be held whenever there is a vacancy in Parliament or the offices of the District and Town Officers

Voter Registration

Voter registration is an on-going event. The Commission strives to maintain an accurate and updated electoral roll.  This is essential to maintain the credibility and integrity of elections in the Kingdom of Tonga.  It is a mammoth task considering the on-going movement of the population from one place to another.  Identification of those who remain or become Tongan subjects or who have died remains key challenges.
